“The future does not belong to those who are content with today, apathetic toward common problems and their fellow man alike, timid and fearful in the face of new ideas and bold projects. Rather it will belong to those who can blend vision, reason and courage in personal commitment to the ideas and great enterprises of America Society.”

Robert Kennedy

The Culminating Project is required for graduation from Quincy High School. This project has three parts: A community service project, a portfolio, and a presentation.

The Community Service Project (“Project”) is an activity that makes the community of Quincy a better place to live.  This project, including planning time, implementation and evaluation, requires a minimum of 15 hours of student participation and planning.

Possible ideas include:

helping at a food bank              sharing talents at a day-care or senior center
working as a peer tutor            conducting an environmental clean-up project
volunteering to help others       conducting voter registration or get-out-and-vote campaign
volunteering to help seniors      educating the community on natural disaster response procedures
conducting a blood drive           helping with Boys and Girls Club
organize a community concert   working with youth groups to promote education, sportsmanship
organize a community play       develop and/or organize a database for a local service organization

The Project:

    Plan the activity

Identify a need in the community
Develop an action plan to meet this need
Collect resources necessary to complete the project
Make a timeline and a schedule for completion

    Implement the activity

Put your action plan into practice
Keep track of your effort in a log
Keep records of your work – photos, clippings, examples, etc.

Evaluate and reflect on your experience and the changes that were made in the plan

What benefits did the community gain?
How did you gain from this experience?
What changes occurred in the community because of your project?

The Portfolio:  You will prepare a portfolio of your activities and academic progress throughout high school.  Completion of this portfolio will provide you with an excellent resource as you continue your education, complete school, work, and scholarship applications, and join the workforce.

The Presentation:  At the end of the year, you will present your project and portfolio to a panel of community members.
